New project: a system for microemboli detection

My Team together with Prof. Z.Religa Foundation for Cardiac Surgery Development (FRK) had received funding for the project: A system for measurement of blood flow and detection of microemboli material for pulse prosthesis of heart assistance ReligaHeart EXT.

The project was submitted in the first call of Applied Research Program NCBiR. The head of the project will be dr Maciej Gawlikowski of FRK, and my humble person will coordinate the research on the side IPPT PAN.

The aim of the project is application of the developed in ZU IPPT PAN the Doppler ultrasound device to measure the flow and detection as well as an assessment of microemboli which form in the system of extracorporeal pulse pump for heart support, of the ReligaHeart EXT type. The problem of clotting applies to all heart assist systems, which is due to exposure of patient blood to artificial materials the chamber and valve. Microemboli is a very serious risk to the patient, since it may cause strokes. Early detection of emboli will enable to take appropriate preventive actions and will serve as a tool to evaluate the work of the artificial chamber..

The long-term goal of the project is integration of the ultrasonic measuring system of the flow and detection of microemboli for continuous monitoring and optimization of the heart assisting system.
